recording lessons
This page is an introductory tutorial guide for teachers who would like to be able to record and edit screencast lessons.
Being able to record and edit lessons is very useful at this time of remote teaching (Jan. 2021). Live lessons may be recorded for later access or lessons may be pre-recorded.
The decision between live lessons and pre-recorded lesson has many factors. Live lessons have the benefit of teachers and students being able to discuss and learn in real time with an instant two-way flow of conversation. However, due to device constraints in a household or quality of internet connection live lessons may not be always be feasible for teachers or students. Pre-recorded lessons allow students to engage with a lesson when they're able to, re-watch sections of the lessons to reinforce concepts and teachers can also save the recorded lessons for reuse with different groups. |

FEatures of pre-recorded lessons
- Engagement of All: Pre-recorded lessons allows all students to engage at any time. Sometimes students may not a have access to a device at a specific time for a live lesson but if it's pre-recorded it gives students more control over their own education creating more independent learners and critical thinkers.
- Developing a Bank of Teaching Resources: When teachers pre-record their lessons and save them then it creates a valuable bank of teaching resources. These lessons could be used as supplementary materials for students that may be finding a concept difficult or as revision material for later in a course.
- Safeguarding: Two-way live lessons brings the potential for inappropriate behaviour or allegations, whether it be teaching a class of 25, smaller groups or one to one teaching. Pre-recorded lessons can avoid this.
- Appropriate Length: Research shows that the optimum time for pre-recorded video is under 6 minutes and engagement starts to drop considerably after 9 minutes (Brame, 2015). It's best to have a number of short videos that are spaced out with appropriate tasks in between than one long video.
- Homegrown is more compelling: By generating screencasts you continue to build trusting relationships with your students. Conversely, sending them to cookie-cutter polished content given by a disembodied voice can damage their capacity to trust you as their lead educator. Evidence indicates that domestic infractions to your homemade videos increase engagement and add humour and a personal touch. It doesn't need to be pretty it needs to be personal.
- Self-paced mastery-based model provides a middle-ground : Direct instruction in person is delivered at a common pace despite the diversity of the learning needs of the audience but without it there is a danger that a large proportion of our students will lack the support and perspective they need to access their text and assignments. Pre-recorded content is student-centred empowering each individual learner and providing them with this all important middle-ground that is accessible 24/7.
